Introducing Lorraine McLoughlin
After a career as a teacher, political advisor and bureaucrat, she has worked in her regional community to develop the arts. In particular she was the inaugural Artistic Director of the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival in the Yankalilla district south of Adelaide. At the second festival she also curated a retrospective exhibition of Barbara Robertson’s paintings and fell in love with the artist as well as her work. Thus the idea of a book was born and she spent hours interviewing Barbara, her friends, former colleagues and fellow artists, and family members. Experiencing the warmth of feeling and regard for Barbara amongst these associates and family made this a heart warming journey. Lorraine’s passion for literature and art are united in this venture to reveal the life and work of this under-recognised artist. Intrigued with what makes creative people tick, she is specially interested in how women have developed their artistic and writing talents while making a living and running homes and families, and usually without the mainstream support afforded their male counterparts. She and her artist husband, Peter Fitzgerald, collect art works in a haphazard way, visit exhibitions in South Australia, and visit interstate and overseas galleries if there is an opportunity. They care for their rural six acres, enjoy country and community life and read avidly, particularly about art, music and literature. During a forum for the 2009 SALA Festival (South Australian Living Artists), Lorraine McLoughlin discussed with Assoc Prof Cathy Speck from the Art History unit of the University of Adelaide, the significance of Barbara Robertson’s art. The author is available to talk to community and student groups about the art of Barbara Robertson and about writing biographies and other related topics.
